The Story & Intro
Hi, I’m Marilyn, 38, from Crete the island where the smell of warm pastry and feta cheese is a daily comfort. Growing up, I spent countless afternoons helping my grandmother fold delicate spinach pies, brushing each layer of dough with golden olive oil. She used to say, “A happy kitchen smells like pastry and laughter.”
Today, I’ve taken her traditional Greek spanakopita and given it a fun Halloween twist Bat-Wing Spinach Puffs! 🦇
They’re flaky little pockets of buttery puff pastry filled with creamy spinach and feta, cut and shaped to look like spooky bats. They’re bite-sized, festive, and full of that Mediterranean flavor I adore. When they bake, the pastry “wings” puff up dramatically, making them look like tiny bats flying across your serving platter.
I made these last Halloween for my kids and neighbors, and they disappeared faster than a vampire at sunrise! Whether you’re hosting a haunted dinner or looking for a fun, savory snack to balance out all the Halloween sweets, Bat-Wing Spinach Puffs will be your party’s star.
They’re whimsical, easy to make, and oh-so-Greek at heart. Let’s get baking!

Ingredients
For the Filling:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cups fresh spinach (or 1 cup frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry)
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- ½ teaspoon dried dill or fresh herbs (optional)
- ¾ cup crumbled feta cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Pastry:
- 1 package puff pastry, thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Black sesame seeds (optional, for “bat eyes”)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Make the Spinach Filling
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 3 minutes. Stir in the garlic and spinach, and cook until the spinach wilts and most of the moisture evaporates.
Remove from heat, let cool slightly, and stir in the crumbled feta and herbs. Add salt and pepper to taste. Set aside to cool completely.
Step 2: Cut the Bat Shapes
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Roll out the puff pastry slightly and use a bat-shaped cookie cutter (or cut your own bat wings with a knife). You’ll need two bat shapes for each puff one for the bottom and one for the top.
If you don’t have a cutter, simply cut small ovals with two “wings” extending from each side it’s easier than it sounds and gives that classic bat silhouette.

Step 3: Fill and Seal
Place a small spoonful of spinach filling in the center of each bottom bat shape. Brush edges lightly with egg wash. Place another bat on top and gently press to seal, using a fork for a decorative edge if desired.
Brush the tops with egg wash and sprinkle black sesame seeds where the “eyes” would be for a fun spooky effect!

Step 4: Bake
Place the bat-wing puffs on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.
The moment they come out, your kitchen will fill with the irresistible smell of butter, feta, and herbs comfort food with a spooky twist!
Serving Ideas
- Serve warm on a black or slate platter to make the golden color pop.
- Add a small bowl of roasted red pepper dip or tzatziki for dipping it’s a delicious contrast to the buttery pastry.
- Perfect for Halloween parties, fall gatherings, or even as spooky appetizers before dinner.
- You can make them smaller for finger food or larger for a main dish.

Conclusion
Cooking these Bat-Wing Spinach Puffs always makes me smile. They combine everything I love Greek comfort food, flaky pastry, and a playful Halloween spirit. The rich spinach and feta filling brings back memories of my grandmother’s kitchen in Crete, while the bat shape adds a dash of fun that gets everyone talking.
They’re easy enough for weeknights but impressive enough for any Halloween party spread. When you take a bite, you get that perfect balance of crispy, buttery pastry and creamy, herby filling.
Halloween doesn’t have to be all sugar and candy sometimes, the real treats are the savory ones. 🦇💚
