Description

Elevate your Thanksgiving table with this savory and sweet stuffing. Featuring high-quality chicken sausage, crisp Granny Smith apples, and hearty sourdough bread, this dish offers a perfect balance of flavors. Infused with fresh sage and thyme, every bite provides a moist, aromatic experience that complements any poultry centerpiece. This crowd-pleasing side dish is a must-have for the holidays, blending rustic textures with a sophisticated profile.

Ingredients

Scale

1 lb chicken sausage, casing removed and crumbled
2 large Granny Smith apples, diced into half-inch cubes
1 loaf sourdough bread, stale and cubed into one-inch pieces
1 large yellow onion, finely diced
3 stalks celery, sliced thinly
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
2 tbsp fresh sage, finely minced
1 tbsp fresh thyme, leaves stripped
4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
Brown the chicken sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat until fully cooked.
Remove the sausage with a slotted spoon and set aside in a large mixing bowl.
Sauté the onions and celery in the remaining fat until softened and translucent.
Add the diced apples to the skillet and cook for three minutes to slightly tenderize them.
Combine the apple mixture with the cooked sausage in the mixing bowl.
Add the cubed bread, fresh sage, and fresh thyme to the bowl.
Pour the chicken broth and melted butter over the mixture while tossing gently to combine.
Transfer the stuffing into the prepared baking dish and cover with foil.
Bake for 30 minutes covered, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

Use stale bread for the best texture; if fresh, lightly toast the cubes in the oven before mixing. Ensure the apples are firm to avoid them turning mushy during baking. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
