Description
Experience the true essence of Mexican cuisine with this authentic guacamole recipe. By using a mortar and pestle to grind aromatics like serrano peppers and cilantro, you release essential oils that infuse every bite with vibrant flavor. Featuring fresh Hass avocados, vine-ripened tomatoes, and crisp white onions, this dip offers a superior, chunky texture that mechanical blending simply cannot achieve. It is the perfect, fresh addition to any appetizer spread, focusing on simple, high-quality ingredients.
Ingredients
3 large Hass avocados
1/4 cup white onion, finely diced
1–2 serrano peppers, seeded as desired
1/4 cup fresh cilantro, coarsely chopped
1 medium Roma tomato, seeded and diced
1 medium lime, freshly squeezed
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
Instructions
Combine the serrano pepper, half of the cilantro, and sea salt in a mortar.
Grind the mixture into a rough paste to release the natural aromatic oils.
Add the diced white onion and diced tomatoes to the mortar and fold carefully.
Scoop the avocado flesh into the mortar and mash lightly with the pestle or a fork until reaching a chunky consistency.
Drizzle the freshly squeezed lime juice over the mixture to provide brightness and prevent oxidation.
Garnish with the remaining cilantro and serve immediately.
Notes
Always use a mortar and pestle if available to preserve the texture; ensure avocados are firm yet yield to gentle pressure for the best mouthfeel. To prevent browning, serve immediately or press plastic wrap directly against the surface of the guacamole if storing briefly.
