Description

A classic, comforting fall dessert featuring tender, spice-tossed apples topped with a crunchy, buttery oat crumble. This recipe uses a perfect blend of tart and sweet apples, ensuring a balanced flavor profile that holds its texture beautifully. It is simple to prepare, making it an ideal choice for cozy weeknights or family gatherings. With warm notes of cinnamon and a rich caramel undertone from the brown sugar, this crisp delivers a satisfying contrast between the soft fruit filling and the golden, buttery topping.

Ingredients

Scale

6 cups Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples, peeled and sliced
0.5 cup granulated sugar (or coconut sugar)
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
0.75 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed small

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Peel and core the apples, slicing them into uniform half-inch thick wedges.
In a large bowl, toss apple slices with granulated sugar, lemon juice, and 1 tsp of cinnamon.
Spread the apple mixture evenly into a greased 9×9 inch square baking dish.
In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and remaining 1 tsp of cinnamon.
Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter until it resembles coarse sand.
Sprinkle the crumble mixture generously over the apples.
Bake for 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.

Notes

Ensure butter is very cold to keep the crumble topping light and crispy. Use a mix of apple varieties to provide the best texture and structure. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven.
