Description
Experience the perfect balance of tart Granny Smith apples and a rich, buttery oat topping. This timeless American dessert is designed with a specific ratio of crisp topping to fruit, ensuring every bite is both crunchy and comforting. The lemon-kissed filling bubbles into a caramelized treat that is quick to prepare and even better enjoyed warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream.
Ingredients
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 tbsp granulated sugar
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Peel, core, and slice the apples into medium-thickness wedges.
Toss apple slices with lemon juice, granulated sugar, and one teaspoon of cinnamon in a large bowl.
Spread the apple mixture evenly into a greased nine-by-nine inch baking dish.
In a separate bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, and the remaining cinnamon.
Cut the cold cubed butter into the oat mixture using a pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form.
Distribute the topping mixture evenly over the apples, covering to the edges.
Bake on the center rack for 40 to 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and fruit juices bubble.
Cool for 15 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.
Notes
Keep the butter strictly cold until the very moment you cut it into the mixture to ensure the crumble stays crispy rather than greasy. If you prefer a sweeter dessert, swap Granny Smith apples for Honeycrisp apples. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
