Description
A classic, comforting dessert featuring tender, cinnamon-spiced Granny Smith apples topped with a golden, buttery, and crunchy oat crust. This simple, reliable recipe balances the tartness of fresh fruit with a sweet, molasses-hinted topping, making it the perfect effortless finish to any meal, from weeknight dinners to holiday gatherings.
Ingredients
6 cups Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced 1/4 inch thick
3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
2 tsp ground cinnamon, divided
1 cup old-fashioned oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Combine sliced apples with half of the granulated sugar and one teaspoon of cinnamon in a large mixing bowl.
Toss the apples until uniformly coated and transfer into a greased 9×9 inch baking dish.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining granulated sugar, brown sugar, and remaining cinnamon.
Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter until the texture resembles coarse crumbs.
Fold in the old-fashioned oats until evenly distributed.
Sprinkle the topping mixture evenly over the prepared apples.
Bake for 45 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling.
Notes
Ensure the butter is cold before cutting it into the flour to achieve the perfect crumbly texture. Serve warm, perhaps with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of heavy cream.
