Description
This quintessential American Southern holiday side dish features tender, roasted yams mashed with warm spices and melted butter, topped with a golden, gooey layer of toasted marshmallows. Roasting the potatoes instead of boiling ensures a deeper, more concentrated flavor, making this a nostalgic and reliable comfort food perfect for any festive gathering or roast turkey dinner.
Ingredients
4 lbs sweet potatoes (red-skinned yams)
1/2 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp freshly ground cinnamon
2 cups miniature marshmallows
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 400°F.
Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly and pierce each with a fork.
Roast the potatoes on a foil-lined sheet for about 60 minutes or until fork-tender.
Allow potatoes to cool slightly, then peel away the skins.
Transfer the potato flesh to a large bowl and mash until smooth.
Stir in the brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla extract, and cinnamon until well combined.
Spread the mixture into a greased baking dish.
Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F.
Top the sweet potato mixture evenly with the miniature marshmallows.
Bake for 10-15 minutes or until the marshmallows are lightly browned and toasted.
Notes
Ensure the sweet potatoes are fully cooked to prevent lumps. If the marshmallows brown too quickly, tent the dish with foil. You can add a pinch of salt to balance the sweetness.
